Some conversations stay with you because they are not about a date on a calendar. They are about why a sound still travels.
That is what came through again speaking with Steven Machat.
With Debbie Machat and the SSK Organization, Steven is carrying The Buena Vista Orchestra across continents: musicians drawn from the Buena Vista Social Club lineage, AfroCuban All Stars, and the bands of Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo and Chucho Valdés. Not a revival act. A living repertoire, still filling theatres from Canada to the American heartland, and soon back in New York.
On 10 October the orchestra is at The Town Hall. In November the story meets Italy in the city: Steven will be our guest of honour on 18 November at the Consulate General of Italy in New York, and on 19 November at Piazza Italia in Times Square.
For us at the Business Care International Award this is the same idea we have always defended. Culture that crosses borders, excellence that does not stay in a museum, and people who take responsibility for keeping a tradition alive for the next room, the next city, the next generation.
